Back in time

Kyseinen lainaus on yhdestä ensimmäisestä blogimerkinnästäni. 41 viikkoa on Koreassa takanapäin, joten koen, että minulla on oikeus palata ajassa taaksepäin ja katsoa maailmaa "vanhan minäni" silmin. Aika on kulunut kuin siivillä, eikä minulla ole enää paljoa aikaa jäljellä ennen Suomeen paluuta. Moni asia on muuttunut täällä olon aikana. Kuinka paljon olen oikeasti täällä oppinut? Olenko saanut sen johtolangan elämääni, jota täältä tulin hakemaan?
"The reason why I applied in the voluntary work was that I want to gain few spice into my life. I had planned to study travel industy, which has been my dream since I was a kid, after secondary high school but later I've come into second thoughts and started to think about working with kids especially with the ones who are mentally ill. The biggest wish about this year is that I'll get some reliability or even a little clue on choosing the right path on my life." This quote is from one of my first entries in this blog. 41 weeks has passed since I came to Korea and I feel like it's finally time to look back in time and see the world with the eyes of "old me". The time has passed by in a blink and I don't have much of it left before I go back to Finland. Many things has changed during my time in here. How much have I actually learned? Have I found that clue for my life that I came here to search for?

I lived half of my life in a small town which population don't even surpass 20 000. When I was ten years I moved to Helsinki which is the biggest city in Finland with population of 615 000 people and my life changed totally back then. I used to think that I lived in a big scale town but after travelling to Japan in the age of 18 I found out that Helsinki is nothing compared to the metropolis in Japan and when I returned to Finland my wanderlust was awful. Now that I've lived in Korea I've learned how busy the life in a metropolis can be and I've started to cherish the peacefulness of Helsinki. The problem is still that I don't feel like my heart belongs in Finland. Actually I'm not sure where it belongs to since I feel like an outsider here as well. My home is in Finland but my heart and mind are not in there. My heart is right now in Korea but my mind don't have the same opinion with my heart. I know that going back is going to be one of the biggest struggles of my life and I'm going to need a lot of time to get used to the life back in Finland. I don't know what future will bring with it but for sure I know that I'm going to study for profession in Finland but I don't want to spend the rest of my life in there.

I've learned a lot about myself during the time in here. I've grown as a person, learned how to get through challenges and deal with different kind of situation with more positive way than I used to. I also believe that I've found the way for my life that I was looking for. After "college" I'll study for social work since I feel like that is the right opinion for myself. The happiness I've experienced during working in here has been fantastic. The little that I give to the people turns to be big when you look with their eyes. Even with a small gesture you're able to make someone laugh and learn. The feelings that I have while working with disabled people are something I can't describe. The work is hard physically and mentally but the happy moments and the laughter of my students make me forget the problems.

Before I came here I was really shy and meeting new people was really troublesome for me. Still the shyness is a problem sometimes but these days meeting people isn't as hard as it used to be and actually talking to random people is quite easy. I used to be scared to meet new people but now a days I'm always looking forward on what kind of people I'll meet during the day and if I'm able to meet new friends. During my time in here I've been able to make many new friends, guys and girls, young and old. I've learned how important it is to have friends next to you. I do have friends in Finland as well but I used to spend most of my time by myself and I was used to keep my griefs to myself but since coming to here there's always someone next to me, mostly because of the housing, so I haven't been able to hide my sorrows from others that easily.

Lähdin tänne oppimaan itsestäni, kuten joskus blogin alkuaikoina sanoin "Vapaaehtoisvuosi on jonkinlainen opintomatka minulle, en siis lähde matkaan maailmanpelastaja asenteella vaan hyvin itsekkäistä lähtökohdista.
I came here to learn about myself; as I told in the beginning of my blogging "The voluntary year will be a learning process for me meaning that I won't go to South Korea while thinking that by doing this work I'll be able to save the world. I'll go there with pretty selfish starting point. I'll go there for me." I definitely came here for me but during the time I learned that while meeting new people the selfishness is left into the background and I wanted to learn about others as well and not only about myself. Using of the word "I" is minimal in korean language since it sounds really selfish for the listener. I try to avoid using it as well these days but while writing in finnish (or in english) it's really hard since making the sentences without "I" sounds weird especially when I try to write about myself.

Korean on muuttunut näiden 9 kuukauden aikana paljon minun silmissäni.
In my eyes Korea has changed alot during the 9 months. I came here with big expectations and I think I did expect too much. After the first months everything was new and awesome but after the beginning I started to realise that everything isn't so pretty in the end. We have had a lot of problems, but what would a life be without problems and struggless but we have survived through everything and learned from the situations while we have continued our trip. There haven't been so big struggless that we would have not been able to surpass. I don't say that I haven't enjoyed my time in here, because I have enjoyed my life fully in here and I'm going to miss Korea when I go back to Finland. When I leave from here I'll leave a lot behind of me but I also have a lot of in front of me. When I came here I knew that I would have to leave at some point but now that the return is already on the door I'm not ready for it. The reality is still that this chapter is about to end and my life is expecting me to start a new chapter for the book of my life.

By the coast

Kuten viime merkinnässä kerroin vierailin viime viikolla Busanissa.
As I told in the last entry I visited Busan last week. I only went there for a day, since I was travelling alone and there was not that many places that I wanted to visit in there, so one day was more than enough for me. On Monday evening I went to Seoul station after nine o'clock and took the Mugunghwa train towards Busan. The trip took about five hours and I had planned to sleep in the train but the noises and my enthusiasm towards the trip kept me awake and I ended up sleeping only an hour. I could have spended time in the restaurant car, which had different kind of games and even karaoke booths inside of it, but I didn't find my way there and spended my time while watching the roof of the train.

Busaniin saavuin ennen auringonnousua ja vietin muutaman tunnin asemalla, odottaen aamun ensimmäistä metroa, jolla suuntasin kohti Dongbaekin asemaa. Asemalta jatkoin matkaa jalan kohti Dongbaekseomia.
I arrived to Busan before the sunrise and I spended few hours at the station while waiting for the first subway of the day, which I took towards to Dongbaek. I walked from the station to Dongbaekseom. I was really excited since I hadn't seen the sea since last October when I visited Taean with my hostfamily. The first gaze towards the sea brought tears into my eyes, I know I sound crazy, but after living ten years by the sea I missed the view a lot. I took my camera and walked around Dongbaekseom, which was crowded with locals doing their morning run.

Dongbaekseom is located just next to Haeundae beach so after I had walked the island around I decided to go walk on the beach. The waves were hitting strongly and few times I almost fell down to the sea while playing around in the water. After few hours at the beach I went to find a bus that would take me towards Haedong Yonggungsa temple. The commute took about 20 minutes and I could get off at the right station, but ended up getting lost while trying to find my way after getting off. My phones battery had died so I couldn't use a map and I decided to follow the local crowd and that made me lost my way. I ended up finding a little harbor during this misadventure so I didn't mind about it so much.

When I finally found the location of the temple I started to regret the adventure. The temple was located about 20 minutes away from the bus stop and after climbing up a little hill I had to struggle with the stairs of the temple. The way down wasn't the part I had struggle with but climbing up the stairs wasn't a pleasent experience especially when the morning sun was burning in the sky. The temple is speacial since it's located next to the coast and not on a hill as the buddhist temples are usually located. The view to the sea was magnificent. The temple itself was nothing special since it looked for me the same as any other temple, but thanks to its location the temple was the most beautiful one I've seen in Korea (or in Japan).

After the temple I headed towars Seomyeon to have morning coffee and after drinking I was walking around the area before taking a subway towards Jagalchi. I was planning to visit the fish market at Jagalchi but when I arrived to the station the scent of fish attacked my nose so strongly that I decided it would be enough for me. So I changed my plan and went to walk around Gwangbok-dong where I spended few hours while window shopping and wondering. The area is known as the Myeongdong of Busan and it definitely was it, even that the area also reminded me a lot of Namdaemun market. There's an escalator, located between Jagalchi and Nampo-dong subway stations, that will take people up to Yongdusan, where the Busan tower is located. I was wondering around at the park in front of the tower for a while before I went up to the tower and enjoyed of the view for some moments.

When the evening arrived I went to Gwangalli beach and since I had some time I had a coffee while waiting for the sunset to come. Unfortunately the weather got colder and a little foggy during the time and the sunset was boring. I still stayed at the beach and waited for the Gwangandaegyo bridges lights to go on. After a while of waiting after sunset the bridge started to get it's color but the sky was still not dark enough and since the weather got a little cold I didn't want to wait any longer so I didn't end up seeing the whole beauty of the bridge.

It was still three hours before my train would depart but I still desided to head back to Busan station since I thought that I could visit the Chinatown there. After the subway ride I started to feel little exchausted, after walking the whole day and not sleeping during the past night, so I decided to skip the Chinatown and just got myself some food from convenience store. I was sitting for a while at the park in front of Busan station before I visited Starbucks and got myself Busan and Seoul cups (I collect Starbucks cups from places I have visited) from there and headed to the warmth of the station. The trip back to Seoul started around eleven o'clock and this time I was able to sleep much better. I arrived back to home around five o'clock on Wednesday morning after an very interesting taxi trip. After the thirty hour trip I was really tired so I just died as soon as I fell on to my bed.

Keeping busy

As I told in the beginning of the month, during our holiday, I did a lot with my friends. Almost everyday were running from location a to location b and so on, but we had fun even that the vacation was quite tiring since we didn't rest that much. We got a new roommate into our apartment in the end on April and I got to know her really fastly. It's a little sad that it took us this long to get to know each other, since she is the first one of the new volunteers who I became friends with. Even that it was forced meeting, since she moved into here, I don't mind because she is really nice company!

Seoulissa on monta pientä asuinaluetta, jossa rakennusten seiniin on maalailtu erilaisia katutaiteita ja yksi näistä sijaitsee pienen kukkulan päällä Hyehwan lähistöllä.
So Mayday we had a day off and we were celebrating the new girls birthday. First we went to meet Denise in Cube Cafe where we spended some time talking and eating. From there we went to see the other entertainment buildings in the area and walked to the Apgujeong rodea subway. From there we took the subway towards Hyeahwa. In Seoul there's few areas that has paintings on the walls of houses and one of these is located on a top of a hill near Hyeahwa station. We were walking around with out cameras until we got tired of the sun and we took the bus towards to Jongno. We walked through Insadong, bought some korean snacks and games and went to see the lanterns at Jogyesa temple. After this we went to Myeongdong where May met her coworkers for dinner and I headed to eat some dakgalbi with out other friend.

On Saturdau we visited the ricecake museum, which was quite boring and we were the only visitors in there during that time. After it we went to see the Jongmyo temple and as we got hungry we headed to Gwangjang foodmarket. We got ourselves some bindaetteok, mayak kimbap, chicken and tteokbokki. After shopping all the items we went to a little part to eat out lunch and met Marcy at Insadong. We visited the ddung (poop) cafe and after that I headed to Ilsan where I had plans to meet a friend for dinner. I spended the night at Ilsan with my friend and came back to home with the first subway.

On Sunday we went to Myeongdong, where we had a plan to visit the dogcafe but since it was full we headed to a cake cafe, where everyone got a free cookie. We ate and went to meet Denises' coworker. Together we went to see Amazing Spiderman 2, which was quite boring and I ended up sleeping most of the movie (also one reason could be that I hadn't slept that much on the night before). After the movie we ate some japanese food and came to home to play some GoStop and talk nonsense.

On Monday we went again to Myeongdong, this time our plan was to do some shopping. After a few hours of shopping we went to eat dinner at a japanese restaurant and afterwards we decided to give a new try for the dog cafe. Because of the late time the cafe was not so crowded so we went inside and spended there few hours. I really missed the dogs in the cafe, especially the dachshund that I fell in love with. After the cafe we went to home and slept quite fast since we were all tired. On Tuesday we ended up resting the whole day. We were planning to go to Dongdaemun and Namsan Hanok village, but in the end we changed the plans and the others stayed at home and rested when I left to a coffeehouse to update my blog.

Two weeks ago I spended two night in Ilsan with my friends eating a lot of delicious food. Mostly we ate samgyeopsal, but we visited in one really famous restaurant which serves samgyeopsal made from korean beef and it had it's price, but it was even more delicious than I had imagined. Also for the first time I had enought courage to drink more than one shot of soju, and in the end it's not as awful as I have feared, but I still don't like it. It's fine to drink with good food and company.

Last week went by normally expect for that I had a lot plans for the weekend. In the end most of the plans got cancelled or changed to another day so I survived the weekend well. First it was planned that I spend Friday night in Ilsan and on Saturday I was supposed to have three different meeting, but in the end only one of these happened. I did spend Friday night in Ilsan and got new friends there, on Saturday I met a friend in Gangnam and had coffee with him and in the evening we went to visit Emart to make some shopping as souvenirs and food for home. After shopping we came home, made some food and ate in the kitchen floor. With few drinks we ended up spending time until the early hours. On Sunday I went to Jongno with Denise and Marcy. We took some purikura at Insadong and after that we had a dinner with our friend.

I still have a lot to do and I should start getting ready for going home as well, since there's not that much time left for me in here anymore. I'm starting to get little anxious about thinking going home, since it feels like nothing has changed in there. The same life, that I left there when I came to Korea, is waiting for me in Finland. I'm stressing about how the "new" me will be able to fit in to the "old" routine. Anyway I'm trying to enjoy the rest of my time in here and not stress too much. This weekend I'm going to go to Busan for few days, which I'm really excited about because I can finally see the sea and also take a few day holiday from the life in Seoul. I expect you guys will hear from me next time after the trip to Busan!
