Beautiful landscape

Rajoitetun ajan johdosta meidän kiertoajelumme oli lähinnä bussissa istumista. Seurueemme kävi vain Itaewonilla, joka on Seoulissa niinsanottu ulkomaalaisalue, ja Namsan tornilla. Namsan torni on Namsanin päällä sijaitseva näköalatorni ja se on yksi Seoulin tunnetuimmista maamerkeistä. Emme valitettavasti menneet näköalatasanteelle asti, mutta jo pelkät näkymät kukkulan päällä ovat upeat. Valitettavasti sumu haittasi näköalaa, mutta silti tornin juurelta pystyi näkemään Seoulia reunustavien vuorien silhuetit. Vietettyämme tunnin tornilla palasimme takaisin bussilla Insadongille ja hotellille. Minä, Denise ja Yunsun unni kävimme syömässä illallista korealaisessa kanaravintolassa. Söimme kanaa, nuudelia ja kasviksia, mausteisessa kastikkeessa. Ruoka tarjoiltiin isolla lautasella, josta jokainen sai syödä mielensä mukaan.

Due to limited time our tour was mostly sitting in the bus. We visited only in Itaewon, which is the foreinger area of Seoul, and Namsan Tower. Namsan Tower is a observation tower in Namsan peak and it's one of the most know landmarks of Seoul. Unfortunately we didn't go to the observatory this time but even the sighst from the peak were great. There was some mist but still we could see the silhouettes of the mountains next to Seoul. We were there for an hour and came back to the hotel by the City Tour Bus, which we left in Insadong. I, Denise and Yunsun unni went to eat dinner at one Korean chickenhouse. We got chicken with noodle and vegetables in little spicy sauce. The food was served in a big dish that everyone could eat from as much as they liked.

Lauantaina nukuimme pitkään Denisen kanssa ja kävimme Myeong-dongilla shoppailemassa. Kävimme metroaseman ostoskeskuksessa, jossa oli muutama edullinen K-pop krääsäkauppa. Teimme visiitin myös Eversing kauppaan, joka on käytännössä SM Entertainmentin bändien (Super Junior, Girls' Generation ja EXO ovat kuitenkin eniten esillä) kauppa, jossa myydään kaikkea aina CD levyistä, vihkoihin ja tarroihin. Siellä on myös mahdollisuus laulaa karaokea ja ottaa purikuria (tarrakuva) lempibändinsä ja jäsenten kanssa. Olimme jo lähdössä kun löysimme yhdeltä sivukadulta pienen Skechers kaupan, jossa tietenkin oli pakko käydä koska SHINee on suunnitellut heille vaatteita.

On Saturday we slept until noon with Denise and went to Myeong-dong to do some shopping. We went to Subway Shopping Mall which had few cheap K-pop shops. Also we visited Eversing store, which is somewhat a shop for promoting SM Entertainment bands (Super Junior, Girls' Generation and EXO were the ones that had most stuff in there) and they sell everything from Cds to notebooks and stickers. Also you can sing some karaoke there and take purikura with your favorite band and members. We were already leaving when we found Skechers from one of the backstreest and of course I had to visit there, because SHINee has desiged them some clothes.

Olin jo aiemmin ostanu SHINeen Misconseption of Us levyn, Henryn Trap minialbumin ja torstaina Myeong-dongilta ostin G-DRAGONin One of a Kind sekä John Parkin Inner Child levyt. Perjantaina ostin SHINee korttisetin Namsan tornilta. Lauantaina mukaan tarttui Onew versio Sherlockista, viime vuoden SHINee kalenteri (koska se oli melkein ilmainen) ja Eversing kaupasta tarrasetti (T-money cardin koristelua varten), rannekoru, kirjanmerkki sekä yksi kuva Onewsta. Tietenkin myös testasimme Denisen kanssa purikuraa, SHINee taustalla ja Skechersistä ostin Onewn suunnitteleman hatun! Hirveää tuhlailua, mutta muutan isäntäperheeseen tällä viikolla ja työt alkavat joten annoin itselleni luvan käyttää tänään tarkoitettua enemmän.

I had already bought before this week Cds from SHINee (Misconseption of Us), Henry (Trap) and on Thursday I got Cds by G-DRAGON (One of a Kind) and John Park (Inner Child) from Myeong-dong. On Friday I got SHINee cardset from Namsan tower. Yesterday I bought the Onew version of Sherlock, last years SHINee calender (because it was almost free) and from Eversing store I got stickers (to decorate my T-money card), bracelet, bookmark and one picture of Onew. Of course we tried out the purikura with Denise, and SHINee on background and from Skechers I got the cap designed by Onew! I used too much money yesterday, but next week I'll go to the host family and my work will start so I let myself spend a little more than I was supposed to spend.

Rakastan kuinka kosmetiikkakauppojen ovilla on aina sisäänvetäjiä, jotka ojentelevat ostoskoreja, joissa on kaikkenlaisia ilmaisia näytteitä. Pitää vain jaksaa kiertää kaikki kaupat läpi ja testata paria tuotetta käynnin aikana. Parin kaupan jälkeen omistaakin jo kasvojenhoito tuotteita seuraavalle parille viikolle. Kävimme syömässä aamupalaa/lounasta Burger Kingissä ja iltapalan nautimme hotellissa kuppinuudelien ja herkkujen merkeissä.

I loved it how the cosmetics shops has people in front of them giving out samples when you go inside. You just have to go into few shops and you have everything you need for the next couple of weeks without using any money. Great thing! We got breakfast/lunch from Burger King and the dinner was cup noodle and snacks back in hotel.

Eilen nukuttiin tietenkin pitkään. Kävimme aamulla Insadongilla kävelemässä ja syömässä aamupalaa/lounasta samassa ravintolassa kuin tiistaina. Tällä kertaa söin bibimpapin kaltaisen ruoan, lihalla ja sienillä. Palasimme hotellille ja Denise lähti Incheoniin Hallyu Wave (“Korea aalto”) festivaalille Marin, toisen suomalaisen vapaaehtoisen, kanssa. Toisinsanoen sain nauttia vapaaillasta blogin kirjoittamisen parissa! Pyykkäsin myös eilen, jotten mene heti ensimmäisenä iltana isäntäperheen äidin luo pyykkisäkin kanssa.

Yesterday we slept until noon again. We went to walking around the Insadong and ate breakfast/lunch in the same restaurant we went on Tuesday. We came back to hotel and Denise left to Incheon to the Korean Wave Festival with Mari, the other Finnish volunteer. So in otherwords I was able to spend my day off while writing this blog! Also I did some laundry so I won't go to the host family on the first day with a bag full of dirty clothes.

Tänään alkaa työt! Olen niin innoissani. Huomenna menen todennäköisesti isäntäperheeseeni asumaan, tai sitten torstaina. En tiedä vielä kumpi päivä. Pitää kysyä Mr. Kimiltä kun näen hänet. Eilen raivaisin huonetta ja tavaroitani, jotta muutto on helpompi sitten kun se päivä saapuu! 

Today is the first day in work! I'm so excited. Tomorrow will probably be the day when I move to host family, or it might be Thursday. I still don't know yet which one. I need to ask from Mr. Kim when I meet him. Yesterday I already packed most of my stuff so moving out will be much easier when I need to do that!

Little more

Keskiviikkona ruokailun jälkeen otimme metron kohti Namsangol Hanok kylää, joka on pieni henkäys perinteistä, vanhaa, Koreaa keskellä modernia kaupunkia. Kylä sijaitsee Namsanin, noin 300 metriä korkean nyppylän, juurella. Ilma täällä Koreassa on sietämätön talvea rakastavalle suomalaiselle, joten en pystynyt nauttimaan kylän kauneudesta niin paljoa kuin olisin halunnut. Tukahduttava kuumuus vei osan sen kauneudesta, mutta aion vierailla siellä uudestaan syksyllä, kun ilma on siedettävämpi ja ruska on kauneimmillaan.

On Wednesday after the lunch we went by subway to Namsangol Hanok village, which is a little breeze of old and tradiotional in middle of modern Seoul. The village is logated next to Namsan, a peak which is about 300 metres high. The weather here isn't that enjoyable for a Finn who loves winter so I didn't enjoy my time that much in the village. The unbearable heat took little bit from the beauty of the village, but I'm planning to visit there again when the autumn arrives and the weather is more comfortable.

Törmäsimme kylässä kolmen japanilaistytön seurueeseen, jotka olivat pukeutuneet hanbokeihin. Hanbok on perinteinen Joseon-dynastian aikanen mekko, jota korealaiset käyttävät nykypäivänä lähinnä vain festivaalien ja virallisten juhlien aikana. Tapasimme nämä tytöt loppujen lopuksi melkein kaikkialla missä olimmekaan ja lopulta pääsimme yhteiskuvaan heidän kanssaan.

In the village we also met three cute Japanese girls who were wearing hanbok. Hanbok is a traditional dress from Joseon dynasty that Koreans wear these days only during festivals and formal celebrations. We ended up meeting these girls all over the village and in the end we got a group photo with them.

Torstai oli sateinen ja aika viileä, vihdoinkin sää josta nautin. Jälleen kerran vietimme aamun oppitunneilla ja keskipäivän tultua kävimme lounaalla. Tällä kertaa ruokana oli eväsrasia ja tofukeittoa, jaoimme ruoan Katyn kanssa, koska emme olleet kauhean nälkäisiä. Ruoan jälkeen menimme McDonald'siin juomaan kahvit ja siirryimme siitä pyörimään ympyrää. Vaihtoehtona olisi ollut kaupunkikierros bussissa, mutta ilman ollesssa suhteellisen huono päädyimme siihen, että menisimme kiertoajelulle perjantaina.

Thursday was a rainy and pretty chilly day, finally weather that I could enjoy about. Again we had the class in the morning and lunch after it. This time I shared a lunch box and tofusoup with Katy, since we weren't that hungry. After that we went to McDonald's for coffee and ended up running in a circle for few hours. We could have went to the Seoul City Bus Tour on Thursday but since it was already a bit late we decided to leave it for Friday.

Orientaation päätyttyä suuntasin Marcyn ja Katyn kanssa Myeong-dongille, josta yritin löytää muutamia kauppoja, mutta eksyimme väärälle metroasemalle ja palasimme hotellille melkein tyhjin käsin, nälän iskettyä. Myeong-dong on hyvin suosittu shoppailualue Seoulissa. Loppuillan aikana opiskelin lisää kieltä ja alan jo hallita lukemisen ja osan kieliopista, sekä sanastoa jonkin verran.

After the orientation we headed to Myeong-dong with Marcy and Katy. I was trying to find few shops but we ended up in a wrong subway station and came back to hotel, almost empty handed when we started feeling hungry. Myeong-dong is a popular shopping area in Seoul. During the evening I studied some more Korean, with a great success.

 

Perjantaina oli viimeinen korean tunti ja oppitunnilla opettaja opetti meille loputkin asiat kieliopin helpolta tasolta. Opittavaa on aivan liikaa ja asiaa tuli niin paljon, että se vain vilisi toisesta korvasta sisään ja toisesta ulos. Pitää tänään aikana kertailla asioita ja seuraavat pari viikkoa aion panostaa todella vahvasti kielen opiskeluun, työn ohella, jotta oppisin helpommin kommunikoimaan koreaksi. On hienoa nähdä kuinka pienikin panostaminen edistää oppimista ja helpottaa elämää.

On Friday we had our last Korean class and the teacher taught us all the things from the beginner level of grammar. There was too many things to learn and everything just floated from one ear to another. I need to revise the things today and really put on some effort for studying during the next few weeks so that the communication will get easier. It's nice to see that even a little effort will make difference on studying new things and also makes my life much easier.

Lounastimme perjantaina samassa paikassa kuin torstaina, tällä kertaa söin tulisen simpukka tofukeiton ja riisiä erilaisten lisukkeiden kanssa. Täyden mahan kanssa siirryimme bussiin, hop on-hop off tyylinen kiertoajelu, joka kiersi Seoulin "keskusta-alueella".

On Friday we had lunch at the same place that we had lunch on Thursday. This time I ate spicy soup with clam and tofu. Also I had rice with different kind of side dishes. With full stomaches we headed to the City Tour Bus, hop on-hop off styled one, that took us around in the downtown area of Seoul.

Day by day

Ihan alkuun kerron hyvät uutiset! Minulle on löytynyt isäntäperhe, kuulin asiasta torstaina Mr. Kimiltä. Perhe on Shawnin isäntäperheen tuttavaperhe, kuitenkaan minulla ei ole mitään kovin konkreettista tietoa heistä. Sen tiedän että tulen asumaan Wondangissa, joka on täältä noin 30 minuutin metromatkan päässä ja töihin menee noin 40 minuuttia bussilla, sekä heillä on kaksi lasta. En tiedä minkä ikäisiä lapset ovat, luultavasti 6 tai 7 vuotiaita. 

At first I'll tell the great news! I've got a host family now, I hear this on Thursday when Mr. Kim told me. The family is known by the host family of Shawn but I really don't know much about them. They live in Wondang, which is about 30 minutes away from here and to work it takes 40 minutes from there. Also they have two children whom I believe to be around 6 or 7 years old.

Viidessä päivässä on ehtinyt taas tapahtua aivan liikaa kaikkea, ja kuvia on kertynyt yli kolmesataa kappaletta, joten jälleen kerran kirjoitan monta merkintää saman päivän aikana, ettei yhdestä tule turhan pitkä. En edes tiedä mistä lähtisin liikenteeseen tai miten saisin tiivistettyä asiat järkevästi. Kaikenlisäksi suomen kielen taitoni on heikentynyt hyvin voimakkaasti kuluneen viikon aikana ja lauseiden muodostaminen tuntuu mahdottomalta.

In five days there's been happening so many things and I've got over 300 photos so I'll write few entries now so that one won't be too long. I'm not even sure where to start from or how I can say everything with few words but still so that everything is in it. Also my Finnish has got more worse during this week and making the post in partly Finnish is almost impossible.

Tämä on viikko on siis sisältänyt korean oppitunteja, yhteensä viisi kappaletta, kaikki olivat kestoltaan noin neljä tuntia. Oppituntien jälkeen menimme turisteilemaan ympäri Seoulia (tai lähinnä pyörimme Jongno-gun ympäristössä), joka päivä uusi kohde. Maanantaista kertoilinkin jo aiemmin, joten aloitan nyt kertomaan asioista päivä kerralla.

There's been five classes of Korean during this week, each about four hours. After the classes we've been touristing around Seoul (or actually around Jongno-gu). I've already talked about Monday so I'll go straight ahead and tell day by day about what has happened.

Tiistaina opettajamme ei päässyt tulemaan paikalle ja meillä oli sijainen, jonka englannin kielen taito oli hyvin heikko. Toisinsanoen oppituntimme oli vain äänteiden toistamista ja opettajan piirrosten merkityksen arvailua. Olin todella väsynyt tiistaina, joten torkuin yli puolet oppitunnista, lähinnä tunkkaisen sisäilman johdosta ja tylsistymisestä, koska oppitunti oli aika hyödytön. Oppitunnin jälkeen kävimme syömässä lounasta Insadongilla sijaitsevassa ravintolla. Söin jonkin annoksen joka sisälsi nuudeleita, kanaa ja vihanneksia teriyakikastikkeessa.

On Tuesday our teacher wasn't able to come so we had replacement who didn't know that much English. In other words the class was about pronouncing the hangul and guessing what the teacher was drawing. I was very tired so I slept half of the class, mostly because of the air inside and also because I was bored. After the class we went to eat lunch in Insadong. I got some dish with noodles, chicken and vegetables in teriyaki.

Ruokailun jälkeen siirryimme käymään Immigration officella, jonka jono oli ylitsepääsemättömän pitkä ja jouduimme hylkäämään Alien Registrationin tältä viikolta kokonaan (kävimme siellä kaksi kertaa ja joka päivä jono oli niin pitkä ettei uusia jonottajia enää otettu sisään). Siirryimme sieltä Seoulin historian museoon. Suuriosa museon näyttelystä kattoi sota-ajan kuvia ja dokumentteja, mutta siellä oli myös vähän modernimpaa tietoa sekä pienoismalleja historian ajoilta, ja nykypäivästä. Pienoismallit olivat todella kiehtovia ja vietinkin suurimman osan ajastani niitä ihaillen.

After the lunch we headed off to the Immigration office but due to a long line we couldn't do the Alien Registration and we had to skip that plan from the whole week (I think we went there twice this week and both times the line was so long that there was no place for new people to join). From there we went to Seoul Museum of History. Most of the exhibitions were about things during war, but also there were little bit of modern stuff. Also there were miniatures from old times and these days. The miniatures were kind of fascinating and I did spend most of my time watching them.

Museosta lähdimme sen takana sijaitsevalle Gyeonghuigung palatsille, jonka pääportti oli remontista johtuen suljettu, mikä tietenkin vei osan palatsin kauneudesta. Pyörittyämme siellä hetken ajan ja monien kuvien jälkeen pääsimme siirtymään takaisin hotellille. Minulla ei ole mitään mielikuvaa mitä teimme illalla, mutta uskon että opiskelin ainakin hetken koreaa ja kävin kylvyssä (jos en ole aiemmin maininnut rakastan hotellihuoneemme kylpyammetta!) sekä taisimme syödäkin jotain. Heikko muistini reistailee. Minun on oikeasti alettava pitämään suunnitelmieni mukaisesti päivittäin päiväkirjaa, jotten unohda asioita.

After the museum we went to the Gyeonghuigung Palace which is located next to the museum. The front gate of the museum was closed due the renovation and it took away part of the beauty of the palace. We're hanging in there for a while and went back to hotel after few group photos. I've got no clue what we did in the evening, but I think I was studying Korean and got a bath (if I haven't mentioned it before: I love our hotelroom since it has bathtub!) and I think we ate something too. My memory is too weak. I really need to start to write a diary, as I was planning, so I can remember things more well.

Keskiviikkona oma opettajamme oli taas paikalla ja oppitunti oli suhteellisen hyödyllinen. Illalla panostin paljon ja opiskelin kolme tuntia itsenäisesti. Edistyin aika paljon ja opin tunnistamaan melkein kaikki kirjoitusmerkit keskiviikon aikana! Oppitunnin jälkeen kävimme lounaalla ja sain vihdoin bibimbapia, jota olin himoinnut siitä päivästä lähtien kun saavuimme Koreaan. Bibimbap on siis ruokalaji, jossa on yleensä riisiä ja kasviksia (on myös olemassa versioita, joissa on lihaa) sekä päälle rikotaan raaka kananmuna, joka sekoitetaan ruoan joukkoon ennen syömistä. Bibimbap tarjotaan lämpimässä kivikulhossa, joka siis kypsentää kananmunan ja pitää ruoan tulikuumana.

On Wednesday our own teacher returned and the class was pretty useful. I studied for three hours in the evening by myself. I did a little progress and learned almost all of the hangul during Wednesday! After the class we went to lunch and I could finally get some bibimbap, which I've been wanting to get since the first day in here. Bibimbap is a dish with rice and vegetables (there's also versions with meat etc.) and you'll get an raw egg on the dish, which will cook while mixing everything. Bibimbap is served in a hot bowl that keeps the food hot and also it cooks the egg.
