Style it out

Lauantaina aamiaisen jälkeen palasimmekin hotellille, jälleen kerran puolitoista tuntia bussissa, joka oli täydempi kuin edellisellä reissulla. Päivän vietimme hotellilla suihkun ja lounaan parissa. Saimme kuulla ettei viikonloppuisin hotellilla tarjota illallista (ja sunnuntaisin aamupala ja lounas eivät myöskään ole tarjolla) joten menimme läheiseen Mc Donald'siin hakemaan huikopalaa ja illan tullen lähdimme Hongdaeen viettämään aikaa. Suunnitelmat eivät tietenkään menneet siten miten olimme niiden ajatelleen menevän ja palasimme jossain vaiheessa Jongnoon ja vietimme loppuillan Jägermeister Baarissa, joka on lähellä hotelliamme.

On Saturday after the breakfast we came back to the hotel, again spending an hour and a half in the bus, which was almost full this time. We spended the day at the hotel and were about to get dinner when we heard that on weekends there's no dinner service at here (and on Sundays the cafeteria is closed) so we went to Mc Donald's and when the evening came we left to Hongdae. Of course the plans we had didn't work out as in the movies so we ended up coming back to Jongno and we spend the end of the night at Jägermeister Bar which is located near our hotel.

Eilen nukuimme hyvin pitkään ja lähdimme iltapäivällä kohti Gangnamia Marcyn ja Denisen kanssa, joka halusi vierailla Cube Cafessa, joka on erityisesti Cube Entertainmentin bändejä "promoava" kahvila. Cube Cafen yläkerrassa sijaitsee studio, jossa bändit käyvät harjoittelemassa ynnä muuta, joten kuten odottaa saattoikin paikka oli suhteellisen täynnä teini-ikäisiä korealaisia opiskelijatyttöjä, jotka halusivat nähdä idolinsa. Kun saavuimme kahvilalle Beast nimisen bändin kaksi jäsentä astuivatkin juuri sopivasti ulos autostaan ja menivät studiolle. Kuvitelkaa huviksenne se kiljunnan ja "oppa saranghae" huutojen määrä. Denisekin sekosi hieman, sillä Beast on hänen lempibändinsä. Saimme nauttia kahvit kyseisssä paikassa ihan rauhassa seuraten kuinka idolit kävelevät ohi. En valita muusta paitsi siitä kiljunnan määrästä. (Psst. Näin HyunAn, tiedättehän sen tytön joka on PSYn Oppa Gangnam Stylessä. Iiik....)

 Yesterday we slept until the noon and around 2pm me, Marcy and Denise, who wanted to visit Cube Cafe, left to Gangnam. There's a studio where the bands practice etc. in the upstair of Cube Cafe so as you guys can guess the place was kinda packed up by teenaged school girls who wanted to meet their idols. When we arrived to the cafe one car came by and two members from Beast came out and went to the studio. Just magine all that screaming and "oppa saranghae" yells. Of course Denise went little crazy too because Beast is her favorite band. Well at least we could have coffee and stay there watching how the idols pass by. I don't complain about anything else than the screams. (Psst. I saw HyunA, you know that girl who is in Oppa Gangnam Style with PSY. Iiiik....)

Tämän aamun olemme viettäneet korean tunneilla ja kävimme Mr. Kimin kanssa hankkimassa meille pankkikortit sekä kävimme postissa ja katsomassa puhelimia. Kävimme äsken ostoksilla ja syömässä donitseja. Nyt ajattelin vain nukkua ja harjoitella hanguleita loppupäivän. Ei siis mitään suuria suunnitelmia.

Today we had our first Korean class and we went with Mr. Kim to get us bank cards. Also we went to post office and check out phones. Denise and I went to shopping after that and ate few donuts. Now I'm just going to sleep and study hanguls. Nothing big for a change. 

The weirdest paintings ever at "school" ceilings.

Olen miettinyt aloittavani ruokablogin erikseen, mihin päivittelen kuvia ruoista mitä syön, sillä välillä kun käyn kuvia läpi, minusta tuntuu että 70% niistä on täynnä ruokaa. Olen myös löytänyt uuden ja halvan rakkauden. Kesäaikaan Koreassa konbinit myyvät juomapusseja ja jääpalamukeja, eli toisinsanoen kylmiä juomia, mitä ostamme aina kahvilloista. Tarjolla on kaikkea alkoholittomista drinkeistä, kahveihin, jääteihin ja mehuihin. Parasta tässä on, että kaikki nämä "ihmejuomat" maksavat 1000-1500 wonia,  alle euron, siinä missä kahvilasta ostaessa samaiset juomat maksavat yli 4000 wonia.

I've been thinking about starting a tumblr or something for food blogging since almost 70% of the photos I've taken are about foods. Also I found a new and cheap love. In summertime konbinis in Korea sell these bags that contains drinks. Once you buy one you will get a cup full of ice, so it's like a cold drink from coffee house. There's everything from alcohol free drinks to coffee and tea and juice. The best part about these drinks are that they cost only 1000-1500 won, which is under 1€, and in coffee houses you pay around 4000 won for these kinds of drinks.

Ollaan harrastettu myös shoppailua jonkin verran. Ihme kyllä en ole kuluttanut niin paljoa rahaa kuin pelkäsin, että tuhlaisin. Se voi tietenkin johtua siitä, että täällä on niin paljon halvempaa kuin Suomessa. 

We've been doing some shopping too. Luckily I haven't spend that much money, as I first was afraid of. Of course the biggest reason might be that things here cost so much less than in Finland. 

I'm so in love with these all. Everything was around 8000 won, 5€. There's 2 caps, handbag, t-shirt, 
dress (which I did cut shorter and made a head band out of the piece), skirt and harem shorts.


Etude House ♥ Needed to buy a hairspray anyway, finally found the perfect gel liner brush, 
lip balm, nailpolish and eyeshadows. Also found MiniME SHINee perfumes and just had 
to get the Onew one, it smells like me! Like umm Vivienne Westwood Boujoir etc.

Green everywhere

Lähdimme torstaina iltapäivällä kohti Dobong-gun alueella sijaitsevaa Darakwon YMCA leirikeskusta. Matka kesti noin puolitoista tuntia bussilla. Ilma oli tietenkin tukalan kuuma, joten matkanteko ei ollut mitään mieluisinta touhua keskipäivällä. Onneksi busseissa on todella hyvät ilmastoinnit, mutta yli tunnin matkan jälkeen ulkoilma tuntuu vielä pahemmalta kuin aiemmin. 

On Thursday around noon we left towards the Darakwon YMCA Campsite which is located in Dobong-gu. The trip was around an one and a half by bus. Of course the weather was very hot so the trip wasn't that pleasent to do during the hottest time of the day. Luckily there's a good air conditioning in the busses here, but after almost an hour in the bus the weather outside was even worser than it was before.

 

 

Leirikeskus sijaitsee Dobongsan vuoren juurella olevassa metsikössä ja se koostui päätalosta, ruokalasta ja muutamista mökeistä, joista kaksi oli varattu meidän käyttöömme, yksi pojille ja yksi tytöille. Odotin telttaretkeä keskellä ei mitään, mutta yllätyksenä saimmekin nukkua patjoilla ilmastoidussa talossa, mikä oli varsin mukavaa. Luonto leirialueen ympäristössä oli mitä ihaninta. Kuten varmaan suurin osa tietää rakkaudestani Hayao Miyazakin elokuvia kohtaan, voitte kuvitella ihastukseni kun näin maisemat, jotka olivat kuin suoraan Tonari no Totorosta tai Mononoke Himestä. Ainut huono puoli leirialueessa oli se, ettei siellä ollut minkäänlaisia taajuuksia, joten yhteydet ulkomaailmaan oli meidän osalta menetetty.

The campsite is located in the woods next to the Dobongsan mountain. There was the main building, cafeteria and few cabins, two of them was for us - one for guys and one for girls. I was waiting for a trip with tents and stuff but by surprise we were able to sleep on mattress in house with aico which was very comfortable. The nature around the campsite was the great. As most of you guys know about my love towars Hayao Miyazakis' movies you can just imagine how much I loved the landscape which was looking like taken straight from Tonari no Totoro or Mononoke Hime. The only bad thing about the campsite was that we had no connection our smartphones, so we had lost the connection to the world outside.

 

Matkalla leirikeskukseen pysähdyimme kaupassa, josta Mr. Kim haki meille pari pulloa virvokkeita, ettemme kuolisi nestehukkaan ennen viikonloppua. Tapasimme samalla Guk Ju oppan, pari vuotta sitten takaisin Koreaan palanneen vapaaehtoisen. Leirikeskuksessa meitä odotti eräs korealainen opiskelija, joka oli kirjoittamassa meistä lehtiartikkelia YMCAn tai ICYEn puolesta (en todellakaan muista kumman) ja hän haastatteli meitä kaikkia yhdessä noin tunnin ajan. Haastattelun ja rupattelun jälkeen saimme maittavan illallisen ja vuorossa oli ohjelmaa. Mr. Kim kertoi meille orientaation tarkoituksen, esittelimme itsemme hieman tarkemmin ja kuulimme työprojekteistamme, tulevasta "opiskelu" viikosta ja muista käytännön asioista. Meidän olisi pitänyt leikkiä jäänsärkijä leikkejä, mutta koska jää oli särkynyt jo aikoja sitten, nautimme illasta ulkona istuen ja puhuen. Toiset nauttivat myös illasta Sojun parista, mutta henkilökohtaisesti olen sitä mieltä että Soju on järkyttävän makuista, joten päätin pidättäytyä vedessä.

We stopped by at a store on the way to the campsite so that Mr. Kim could buy us some drinks so we wouldn't die of thrist before the weekend. We met Guk Ju oppa, Korean volunteer who has returned to home few years ago, there. At the campsite there was a Korean student waiting for us because he was going to write an article into magazine for YMCA or ICYE (I don't remember which one he was there for) and he was interviewing us all for an hour. After the interview and some small talk we got some dinner and then we had program. Mr. Kim talked to us about the orientation and about our work, up-coming week and other stuff. We were supposed to play ice breaking games, but because the ice was broken already we just had fun while chatting. Some of the guys did enjoy few cups of Soju during the night, but personally I dislike Soju really much so I skipped it.

Seuraavana päivänä aamiaisen jälkeen Mr. Kim piti meille pienimuotoisen luennon asioista, joita emme torstaina käyneet läpi. Saimme kuulla tarkemmin ICYE Koreasta, sekä työprojekteista, isäntäperheistä, vakuutusasioista, viikkorahoista ja toiminnasta ICYE vapaaehtoisena. Lounaan jälkeen suuntasimme Guk Ju oppan kanssa kohti Uijeongbuta, joka sijaitsee Gyeonggi-don pohjoispäässä heti Seoulin rajan vieressä. Uijeongbussa hajaannuimme kahteen porukkaan ja vietimme pari tuntia shoppailun merkeissä. Paikka johon Guk Ju oppa meidät opasti, osoittautui hyvin kalliiksi Shinsegae-nimiseksi ostoskeskukseksi, joten päädyimme vain kiertelemään ympyrää ja ostimme melkein pelkkiä herkkuja ja virvokkeita iltaa varten. Youngri unni oli liittynyt poikien seuraan näiden kahden tunnin aikana ja lähdimme takaisin kohti leirikeskusta, jonne matkalla pysähdyimme ostamaan virvokkeita illan bbq juhlia varten.

On the next day after the breakfast Mr. Kim held a little lecture about things we didn't go through on Thursday. We got to know more about ICYE Korea and the workprojects, host families, insurance, payments and about being an volunteer in Korea. After lunch Guk Ju oppa took as to Uijeongbu, which is located in Gyeonggi-do next to the border of Seoul. In Uijeongbu we split up and spend few hours while shopping. The place where Guk Ju oppa took us to ended up to be an expensive Shinsegae mall so we ended up going around and bought mostly sweets for the night. Youngri unni had joined the boys while we were apart and we left back to the campsite, on the way we stopped to buy drinks for bbq.

Saavuttuamme leirikeskukseen tapasimme muutamat vapaaehtoiset, jotka ovat viettäneet Koreassa jo kuusi kuukautta ja päädyimme leikkimän jäänsärkijä pelejä. Kyllästyttyämme niihin, pojat nauttivat uima-altaasta ja me muut auringosta sekä toistemme seurasta, ennen illallista ja sen jälkeen alkavaa bbq juhlaa. Saimme vielä yhden ystävän mukaan suureen joukkoomme, kun Moonseok oppa saapui paikalle. Mr. Kim lähti hakemaan viimeistä saapuvaa vapaaehtoista, Marcya, lentokentältältä ja Moonseok oppa oli loppuillan grillaaja. Grillausta korealaisittain oli siis illan ohjelma, sekä myöhemmin kaiken syömisen ja juomisen jälkeen meidän piti vielä kasata itsemme ja tehdä vähän vakavampia asioita, kuten kertoa huolistamme ja odotuksistamme tälle vuodelle. 

When we arrived to the campsite there was few of the older volunteers waiting for us and we ended up playing some ice breaking games. When we got tired on those the guys went swimming and others were hanging around in the sun before dinner and bbq. We got one more friend into our big group when Moonseok oppa arrived. Mr. Kim left to pick up the last volunteer, Marcy, from the airport and Moonseok oppa was the grill master for the end of the evening. Korean bbq was the program for that night and after all that eating and drinking we had to do some serious stuff while thinking what are our worries and expactations for the year.

The Night of Friendship-ohjelmamme päättyi siihen, kun Mr. Kim palasi viimeisen vapaaehtoisen kanssa lentokentältä. Olimme viettäneet edellisen yön kolmestaan mökissämme ja viimeisenä yönä meitä olikin kaiken kaikkiaan kahdeksan henkeä. The Night of Friendship sai viimeistään meidät kaikki uudet vapaaehtoiset tuntemaan olomme kotoisaksi, kiitos korealaisten "tukihenkilöidemme" ja vanhojen vapaaehtoisten jotka olivat todella mukavia meitä kohtaan. Opimme myös viikonlopun aikana kantapään kautta, ettei täällä saa heittää vessapaperia vessanpönttöön (tiedän kuulostaa hyvin oudolta ja sitä se myös on) vaan se tulee heittää pieneen roskakoriin pöntön vieressä. Täällä putket eivät nimittäin ole mitään maailman suurimpia, joten ne menevät tukkoon hyvin helposti, terveisin tulviva vessa molemmissa mökeissä.

"The Night of Friendship" ended when Mr. Kim arrived from the airport. We had been spending the last night at the cabin with only three person inside and that night we had total of eight sleepers in. The Night of Friendship made the new volunteers feel like we are at home (or at least I think so), mostly thanks to the Korean "supporters" and the old volunteers who were so nice to us all. Also during the weekend we did learn that we are not supposed to put toilet paper into the toilet (ikr it sounds very weird). We're supposed to throw it into a bin next to the toilet because the pipes around here are not wide so they get stuck easily, greetings from the toilets which flooded.

New world

Viime viikolla vietin läksiäisiä ystävieni ja työkavereiden kanssa. Juhlat olivat varsin mukavat, ruokaa ja juomaa riitti ja hyvä fiilis sai matkalle lähdön tuntumaan helpommalta. Jäähyväiset tuntuivat ikäviltä, mutta hampaita purren hyvästelin kaikki, veljeäni lukuunottamatta, ilman kyyneileitä. En yleensä itke seurassa, joten säästin kaikki itkut yksinäisiin hetkiin.

Last week I had my farewell party with friends and co-workers. The party was really nice, there was plenty of food and drinks and the awesome feeling made the leaving feel like it's easy. Farewell felt bad but while biting my lip and saying good bye I managed not to cry, expect when I said bye to my brother. I'm someone who usually don't like crying in a group so I saved the crying for lonely moments. 

 


Maanantaina tosiaan oli lähtöpäivä, ja tänään vietämme ensimmäistä kokonaista päivää Korean maaperällä. Lähdin Suomesta kohti Etelä-Koreaa kello 17:30 Finnairin lennolla. Lento saapui maankamaralle 8:32 Korean aikaa eli 2:32 Suomen aikaa. Lentokentällä tuli vietettyä noin kahdeksan tuntia, kun odotin noutajaa, Korean ICYE "johtajaa" Mr. Kimiä. Yhden vapaaehtoisen lento oli myöhässä niin paljon, että pääsimme lähtemään hotellille vasta neljän jälkeen, vaikka aiemmat suunnitelmat olivat, että hotellilla oltaisiin oltu jo ennen neljää. Mitäänhän me ei sille mahdeta, että lennot ovat aina toisinaan myöhässä. Käytin aikani kentällä seuraillen kentän työntekijöitä, vartijoita ja siivoojia, joista suurin osa vain hengasi jossain nurkassa ja pelasi kännykällä. Käyhän se työ niinkin, kun kerta siitä maksetaan.

On Monday I left Finland and today is our first full day in Korea. I left from Finland at 17:30 with a flight operated by Finnair. I was back on land at 8:32, Korean time, so it was 2:32 in Finland. I spended something aroud eight hours in the airport, waiting for a pick-up, Mr. Kim the director of ICYE Korea. The flight of one of the volunteers was late so much that we could leave towards the hotel until 4pm though the first plan was to be at home before 4pm. Of course no one could do anything about the late flight. I spended my time at the airport while watching around and following the workers, security and cleaning, and most of them was just playing with their smart phones or stading in some corner. Sure they can do their work like that if you get paid like so.

Eilen minun lisäkseni Koreaan saapuivat saksalainen, Denise ja australialainen, Shawn. Tänään tänne saapui kaksi tanskalaista, Kristian ja Thomas. Myöhemmin vielä on tulossa vapaaehtoinen Taiwanista, Marcy. (Minulla on huono nimimuisti, joten en ihmettelisi jos muistan jonkun nimen väärin) En ole varma onko meitä tulossa enempää, mutta eilen Mr. Kimin kanssa käydyn keskustelun perusteella meitä olisi vain kuusi tänä syksynä. Kaiken kaikkiaan vapaaehtoisia on Koreassa tällä hetkellä noin viisitoista (tästäkään määrästä en ole varma) joista osa on jo viettänyt maassa noin seitsemän kuukautta.

Yesterday besides me Denise from Deutchland and Shawn from Australia came to Korea. Today Kristian and Thomas from Denmark came over. Later on there should be one more volunteer from Taiwan, Marcy. (I'm really bad with names so I wouldn't be surprised if I don't remember all the names correct.) I'm not sure if there's more of volunteers but if I understood Mr. Kim right we're the only ones coming this fall, so five of us in total. In total there is about fifteen volunteers (I'm not sure about the amount) totally and some of us has been here for seven months already.

(Marcy was the one who arrived on Friday, on Wednesday evening Katy arrived from USA.)

Ensimmäinen ilta ja tämä päivä ovat menneet ympäristön tutkimiseen. Kaikki on hotelliltamme ihan kävelymatkan päässä esimerkiksi Insadongille kävelee alle 5 minuuttia. Ainut asia mitä ihmettelen on se, että lähin kolikkopesula on kuulemma bussimatkan päässä, joten taitaa mennä vuosi käsipyykillä. Ellen sitten löydä kolikkopesulaa työni läheltä tai saa isäntäperhettä jossain vaiheessa vuotta.

On first evening and today we have been checking around the surroundings of the hotel. Everything is near us for example we walk under five minutes to Insadong. The only thing I'm curious about is that the nearest coin laundry is a bus trip away so I think I'll just wash my clothes by hand for a year. Unless I find one near my work or I'll get a host family during this year.

 Kaikki länsimaalaiset ravintolatkin ovat myös suhteellisen lähellä, jos joskus iskee koti-ikävä ja kaipaa mäkkärin mättöjä! Hotellissamme tarjotaan joka päivä aamupala, lounas ja päivällinen, kaikki mitä olen maistanut on ollut suhteellisen hyvää. Kimchiä ja kaikkea muuta hyvää, joista en kyllä ole varma että mitä mikäkin on ollut. Aamupalalla saimme Korealaisten ruokien lisäksi munakokkeli, nakkeja ja paahtoleipää.

Every foreing restaurants are also pretty close so if I ever feel homesick I can grap a bite in McDonalds! There is a breakfast, lunch and dinner free of charge for us in the hotel, and everything I've got here this far is pretty delicious. Kimchi and something else good, that I don't know the names for. Also in the breakfast accompanying the Korean dishes there was scrambled eggs, sausages and toast.

 

Kävimme tänään ostamassa T-money kortit, joka toimii maksuvälineenä julkisessa liikenteessä Seoulissa ja esimerkiksi Busanissa. Sillä pystyy myös maksamaan esimerkiksi myyntiautomaateissa. Kortti ei ole pakollinen hankinta, mutta se helpottaa elämää suuresti, joka kerta ei tarvitse ostaa erillistä lippua kun matkustaa. T-money kortti toimii siten, että sitä näytettään kun astutaan julkiseen liikenteeseen ja kun sieltä poistuu ja kortti veloittaa automaattisesti sen summan rahaa minkä edestä olet matkustanu.

We got our T-money cards today, they work as a charge card in the public transportation for example in Seoul and Busan. You can use it in vending machines for example for paying. The card isn't something you have to get but it makes the life so much easier because you don't have to buy a ticket everytime you travel. The T-money card works so that when you go inside the drive you show it in a machine and once you get out you show it again when the card will charge the money you have used while travelling.

Yksi asia minkä olen täällä tänään huomannut: vaatteet ja kengät ovat todella edullisia, varsinkin metroasemilla olevissa kaupoissa. Suurin osa maksaa 5 000 - 30 000 wonia, sama summa euroissa on noin 3 - 20€. Harmi vain että koipeni ovat niin isot ettei täältä löydy helpolla kenkiä. Vaatteita pyrin välttelemään, kuten kotona lupasin!

One thing I've noticed during today: the clothes and shoes are like really cheap, especially at the shops in metro stations. Most of them cost 5 000 to 30 000 won, which is 3 to 20€. I'm sad that my legs are so big that it's hard to find a right sized shoes in here. I try to avoid the clothes, since I promised so at home!

Löydettiin hirveän kahlauksen kautta pari musiikkikanavaa televisiosta, ei tarvitse miettiä mitä katsoo! Tässä hotellin televisiossa on pari sataa kanavaa, löytyy kylläkin kaikkea ostoskanavista aina pelikanaviin asti. Olen myös löytänyt uuden rakkauden, vihreä tee lime-mojitolla tai hunaja-omenalla maustettuna! Niin herkullista.Veikkaan, että näitä herkullisia rakkauksia tulee löytymään vuoden aikana muutama. Starbucksiinkin tie vei ja pääsin juomaan kauan kaipaamaani Matcha Frappucinoa!

We found few music channels from the TV after searching all the channels around so we don't have to think about what to watch! There's almost two hundred channels on the TV and we can find everything from shopping channels to game streams. I've also found a new love, green tea with lime-mojito or honey-apple flavor! So delicious. I'm sure there will be more of these delicious loves during this year. Also I finally went to Starbucks and got to drink Matcha Frappucino which I've missed for a very long time!
 

Huomenna lähdemme kohti Darakwonin leirintäaluetta, jossa orientaatio leirimme pidetään. Se kestää pari päivää, jonka jälkeen meillä on kielkurssi ja turisti juttuja viikon ajan. Hankimme muun muassa korealaiset puhelinliittymät sekä pankkikortit. Työt alkavat puolestaan syyskuun alussa!

Tomorrow we will be heading of for the orientation camp in Darakwon Campsite. It will last few days and after it we will have language course and some tourist things for a week.We will get Korean phone subscriptions and bank cards. Our work will start at the beginning of September!
