Life as a farmer

Pääsin kokemaan todella monia asioita perheeni kanssa. Ensimmäisenä viikonloppuna he veivät minut kiipeilemään Bukhansanille. Toisena viikonloppuna he veivät minut vierailemaan DMZ:llä ja armeijatukikohdassa DMZ:n sisällä. Kolmantena vietimme Chuseokia maalla, jonne he pyytivät minua mukaansa jo ensimmäisten päivieni aikana heidän kotonaan.
I got to experience many great things with my family. On the first weekend they took me out hiking in the Bukhansan national park. Secong weekend we spended while visiting DMZ and an army base inside DMZ. On the third weekend we spended Chuseok in the country side, where they asked me to join them during the first days at their home. We also baked some sweet bread, pizza and cake with them. My mom had never used the oven before and when I heard that I told her that I could teach her how to bake and the kids enjoyed baking a lot too so it was great.

Kuukausi sitten juhlittiin Chuseokia, mikä tarkoitti viittä päivää maalla. Chuseok on yleensä kolme päivää kestävä juhlapyhä, mutta tänä vuonna Chuseok asettui juuri sopivasti ennen viikonloppua. Chuseok on siis korealainen kiitospäivä, jota juhlitaan kuukalenterin 8. kuukauden 15. päivänä.
About one month ago we celebrated Chuseok, which meant five days away from Seoul. Usually Chuseok last only for three days but this year it was just before the weekend making the holiday five days long. Chuseok is Korean style Thanks giving day which is celebrated on the 8th month 15th day according to lunar calender. During Chuseok most of the families visit their home city where there is a ceremony for the ancestors. After the ceremony the families usually visit grave tombs which are usually located in little mountains or hills.

My dads home is in Sangju which is located in the middle of South Korea near Daegu. We spended there one night. We left from Seoul on Wednesday before 9am but we arrived at Sangju just after 5pm because the traffic jam on the roads was just crazy. We spended the night at my dads parents home while eating and drinking and on the next day we visited his uncle where we took part in a ancestor ceremony. After the ceremony we ate the food that was part of the ceremony because it's said that the ancestor will give the eater good luck for the next year through the food. We visited other uncles home as well and took part in the same ceremony. After that we went to visit few of the grave tombs and after two hours of tombs we left towards my moms home.

My moms home was located in the country near Taean. When I say it was in country I really mean it. We spend three nights in the middle of no where. We spended time while harvesting peanuts and potatoes and we also helped with cleaning some dried chilies. The days on the country started with alcohol and ended with it which was somehow funny since knowing how the Koreans can't handle alcohol you could expect the day to be ending with only kids sober. On the first night there was almost twenty people sleeping in one room. My mothers four sisters, their children and husbands all spend the first night at the country and after that there was more less people on every night. In the last night there was only two families staying over. Men slept in a different room but the kids and women slept all in the same room.

I felt a little bit like an outsider when I was at my fathers home. Everybody was so busy with the Chuseok preparations so they didn't have time to explain me what's going on and I ended up spending most of my time just sitting and watching. My moms family was very kind to me from the first moment I went there and I felt like I was at home since everybody was treating me as a part of the family. If there was something going on someone always tried to explain it to me with their broken english. I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy my time at my fathers home but I still felt much better at the country since I didn't feel like an outsider in there.
